Merry Crochetmas!

For three days only, we are auctioning a very unique, very primitive snowman! Sue Aucoin hand crocheted this snowman out of 100% spun wool, and then put him through a process know as felting, fulling and or boiling wool. This process shrinks the piece giving it a more solid, thicker effect. SNoWMaN is 18″ tall from the top of his hat to the tips of his toes and he is thread jointed in his arm and legs. He doesn’t just hang from wire on his back, he’ll also sit. His face is embroidery.. and a little shading added for detail. His hat is stitched on. He wears a fabric collar. SNoWMaN brings with him his Christmas tree and WiSH sign. He has been made to look passed down. This quality-made, unique item is a perfect addition to any primitive décor, which we hope will be treasured for years to come. Hurry before he’s gone! Merry Christmas and thanks for your consideration!

Antique-style, Christmas-y, Primitive bear.

Merry Christmas bear is a unique piece, made using an old technique.

Chris bear was crocheted out of 100% spun wool, and then put through a process know as felting, fulling and or boiling wool.  The fulling shrinks the piece giving it a more solid, thicker effect. Chris bear is a small size of 6 1/2″ tall and fully thread jointed. His face and claw details are embroidery.. and a little shading added for detail. I also crocheted his Christmas collar, which can be removed. Chris bear brings with him his Christmas wreath. He has been made to look passed down — A perfect addition to any primitive décor.

All about Autumn.

By: Sue Aucoin

To us, Autumn is all about pumpkins, spicy colors, warm beverages, and cozy knits. My newest design, a PRiMiTeDs bear encompasses everything that we believe this season has to offer. Please meet CHai-T with his creamy, pumpkin pin cushion!

This small bear (5″ tall) is fully jointed and fulled / felted from 100% wool. He is also slightly weighted. His chai-colored fur was hand-dyed and shaded for a more unique look. He even has a hand-embroidered face. He is keeping the chill away with his cabled, cinnamon-hued scarf, which was handknitted with acrylic by Rhonda. His scarf is pinned on so it doesn’t blow away in the Autumn breeze! He comes with his own slightly-weighted, cream-colored pumpkin pin cushion that is 3″ in diameter and has the rustic letters of “Fall” stitched to it. Chai-T is pinned and posed atop his pumpkin. This bear has been made to look passed down, and is a perfect addition to any primitive collection.

Tiny tea cup-sized, rose-hued bear.

It’s another Fulled/Felted bear… Lil’ RoSe!

This bear is crochet, using spun wool, and then put through a process known as felting/boiling. This is when crochet and or knitted items are shrunk for a thicker, softer appearance.  Lil’ RoSe was hand-dyed in a lovely shade of pink and then aged for added detail. This bear is only 5” tall, a perfect teacup size!  She is fully thread jointed, and has an embroidered face and claws.  She wears a hand crochet collar. This bear has been made to look passed down — A perfect addition to any primitive collection!

Rare Hare.

thread bears® _oldbunny2

This “RaRe-HaRe” is the newest offering from Thread Bears®.  Both this fuzzy little bunny and his hand-dyed, speckled eggs are made from spun wool, then fulled/felted.  This fulling/felting process is uncommon for collectibles, but we love the fleece-like feel it gives to our little creatures.  Standing at 5″ tall, he has “stitched seams” and details to give him a family-heirloom feel.

I “felt” the need to post!

Felting? Fulling? Who really cares what it is called.
Tuh-mey-toh, tuh-mah-toh
Whatever you wanna call it, we are pleased with the results!

The technique widely known as “felting,” is a process of basically making wool thicker, softer, fluffier, more durable, and more solidified. Since last summer, we have experimented with MANY ways to full our products. Unlike needle felting or wet felting, fulled crocheted/knitted bears aren’t a commonly offered product. So, since we are always trying to create new characteristics and ideas for our creatures, we decided to full/felt some of our furry friends.

Now, from our experience, there is no exact science that makes each product turn out a certain way. Take into consideration that many variables contribute to different outcomes. Felting/fulling has these basic variables: moisture, temperature, and agitation. Though it may seem simple enough, a certain brand of soap or slightly-off water temperature will give you different results, and many types of wool felt up differently.

Of course, we couldn’t just felt/full up a bear and offer it for sale. We have also mastered techniques for dyeing our own wool to give an even more unique look. It’s this attention to detail that sets our products apart from the rest. Another great detail of these fulled items is that they are still considered miniature-sized, but don’t lose any of the detailing or characteristics. Below is just a few of my fulled bears. Keep an eye out for when these items and more are available!
